Dorothy Mae Moorehead

Dorothy Mae (Jones) Moorehead of Paw Paw, IL died peacefully June 29, 2021 at Anam Memory Care, Rockford, IL with her daughter Becky Provi and son Doug Moorehead by her side, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

She was a lifelong Paw Paw resident, farmer’s daughter born July 15, 1931 to Clyde E. and Beatrice E. (Marlow) Jones. She attended Paw Paw public schools, then married Roger Moorehead, the love of her life, on April 22, 1950. Together, they purchased a piece of land and a lean-to building which they turned into a one-room, plus kitchen and bathroom home, in which to raise their family. Over the years they turned this property into her pride and joy… a 5-bedroom, 2-bathroom home on 3 acres where they raised five sons, a daughter, granddaughter and grandson. They remained there until Roger’s death in 2012 and her subsequent move to Anam Memory Care in 2013.

Dorothy’s first priority was her family. She was a devoted wife to Roger and a stay-at-home mom who was very involved in her children’s activities, cooking, baking, gardening, crafting, and bird watching (she knew the names of every bird on their property). She was also very involved at Paw Paw United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and provided many pies for the annual Thanksgiving Turkey Supper. She was also head chef for Paw Paw Public Schools for several years. She loved being connected to all of her children’s friends, who often referred to her as “Mom” or “”Ma”.

Dorothy is survived by her son Kevin of Ukiah, CA; daughter Becky (Thorvalson) Provi of Rockford, son Dan of West Brooklyn, son Doug of Earlville, IL; brother Clyde Everett Jones of Woodstown, NJ; sister Wanda Sue (Roger) Baker of Eugene, OR; numerous grandchildren, great-children, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Predeceased by parents; husband Roger; sons Michael and David; great-grandson Anthony Browder, sons-in-law Dick Provi, Steve Thorvalson, and Don Gilreath; brothers Paul, Bill and Joe Jones.

Visitation will be held Sunday, July 11 from 1-3 p.m. at the Paw Paw United Methodist Church. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. with interment at Wyoming Cemetery, followed by a time of fellowship at Paw Paw United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Paw Paw United Methodist Church, or an Alzheimer’s organization of your choice.

    Becky(and Family),

I am surprised that my memory didn’t fail me. it has been many decades ago..:)) I met the fastest typist in the Universe!!

I have also lost my Mother and my Father, and no matter how old we are….it is a difficult loss.

Faith saves us, every time. We know that they are in loving arms, but we miss them.

Wishing you only the best. I see that you inherited your loveliness and beauty from your Mom!! May she rest in Peace.

    Respectfully, an old old Friend….

Gloria (I remember Gail and Nancy too)

  2. Doug, my sincerest condolences. It is tough losing a mother but the lessons and examples set by that generation needs to be preserved. Although I didn’t know her, I knew you and it was obvious that you were special at least in part because of your parents. Dorothy’s teaching and examples will remain with you forever. Out of the blue you will recall a moment, situation or saying that reminds you of the past. Enjoy the great memories and a life well lived. You are her legacy and a very good one I might add. I wish only the best for the Moorehead family during this difficult time.
