Richard J. “Dick” Binder, 75, of Compton, passed away Sunday, January 25, 2015 at Rockford Memorial Hospital. He was born February 20, 1939 in Chicago, the son of Roman J. and Mary T. (Laketek) Binder. He was united in marriage to Barbara Battles on May 16, 1959 in Hillside, IL.

Dick worked for Com Ed for 38 years. He served on the Lee County Board for 14 years until his retirement and was presently serving on the Viola Township Board. He was an active and dedicated member of St. Mary’s Church in West Brooklyn. He also dedicated time volunteering at the N.I.C.E. Food Pantry. He loved the outdoors and working on his property. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barb; two children, Ronald J. (Sharon) Binder of Lisle, IL and Susan T. (John) Gebel of Glen Ellyn, IL; six grandchildren, Terra (Mike) Maher, Jill (Kyle) Schoneman, Molly Gebel, Dana Gebel, Robert Binder, and Benjamin Binder; three great-grandchildren, Colt, Kimber, and Berkley; two brothers, Tom (Sue) Binder of Hoffman Estates, IL and Larry (Barbara) Binder of West Bloomfield, MI; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sons, Richard M. “Rick” Binder and David Binder; and his four legged friends, Sam and Partner.

Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 2520 Johnson Street, in West Brooklyn.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, January 29, 2015 at St. Mary Catholic Church. Rev. Randy Fronek will officiate. Interment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, IL.

Memorial contributions in Dick’s name may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church or N.I.C.E. Food Pantry, 346 S. County Line Road, Lee, IL 60530.
